Conversation Hearts a Valentine’s Candy Favorite for Over 100 Years

When it comes to Valentine’s Day candy there is probably one that comes immediately to mind – conversation hearts, or Sweethearts.  These heart-shaped candies with sweet sayings printed on them have been around since 1901 and you probably remember them from your own childhood.

Sweethearts were originally manufactured by the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco for short – the same company that brought us the famous Necco Wafers that so many people enjoy.  When Necco went out of business, the Spangler candy company bought the recipe in 2018 however, the treats took a year off in 2019 as the manufacturing equipment was moved to a new plant.  But, in 2020 Sweethearts were available once again to keep up the holiday tradition that we all look forward to each year.

Originally, conversation hearts had sayings on them such as “Be Mine”, “Kiss Me”, “Call Me”, or “Miss You”.  But as times have changed, the sayings have been updated to include “Call Me, or “Email Me” to keep the candy as relevant as our technology!

Seeing the success and following that Sweethearts have each Valentine’s Day, other candy companies came out with their own special twist on this classic treat.  Candy giant Brach’s version of Conversation Hearts only comes in a bag, while the original Sweethearts comes bagged and in those cute boxes we all used to hand out to our classmates at school.

Of course, there’s always going to be a trendy version of a candy favorite, and conversation hearts is no exception!  If you’re a fan of Hot Tamales… well, you guessed it!  There is now a Hot Tamales version of conversation hearts available for those looking to turn up the heat.

These cinnamon-flavored conversation hearts are perfect for igniting a spark on Valentine’s Day!

So while you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day candy, don’t forget to grab some Sweethearts conversation hearts candies.  We’re sure they will bring back plenty of memories and may even start a new holiday tradition with your own children.
