The History of Easter PEEPS – A Sought After Seasonal Treat

The history of Easter PEEPS candy can be traced back to the early 1900s. The Just Born candy company, founded by Russian immigrant Samuel Born in 1910, began producing the marshmallow treats in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the year 1953. The original PEEPS were handmade and took nearly 27 hours to create. The process was labor-intensive, and the treats were not widely available for purchase outside of the local area.

In the 1960s, Just Born introduced new technology that significantly reduced the time it took to make PEEPS. This allowed the company to mass-produce the candy, making them more widely available and increasing their popularity. The bright yellow PEEPS chicks, which were originally only available at Easter, became a year-round treat.

PEEPS quickly became one of the top-selling types of non-chocolate Easter candy in the United States. The company expanded its PEEPS product line to include different shapes, colors, and flavors. Today, PEEPS are available in the traditional chick shape as well as bunnies, and for Halloween – pumpkins, and ghosts. They also come in a variety of colors, including pink, blue, and purple, and flavors such as chocolate pudding and cotton candy.

In addition to being a popular candy, PEEPS have also become a cultural phenomenon. They have been featured in popular TV shows, movies, and music videos. PEEPS have also been the subject of numerous online memes and have even been used in scientific experiments.

In recent years, Just Born has expanded the PEEPS brand beyond just candy. The company now produces PEEPS-branded clothing, accessories, and home decor items. PEEPS-themed events, such as the PEEPS Fest in Bethlehem, have also become popular.

Overall, Easter PEEPS have come a long way since their humble beginnings. From a labor-intensive, small-scale treat, PEEPS have become a beloved and popular candy enjoyed by people of all ages. The brand has also expanded beyond just candy to become a cultural icon.

Conversation Hearts a Valentine’s Candy Favorite for Over 100 Years

When it comes to Valentine’s Day candy there is probably one that comes immediately to mind – conversation hearts, or Sweethearts.  These heart-shaped candies with sweet sayings printed on them have been around since 1901 and you probably remember them from your own childhood.

Sweethearts were originally manufactured by the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco for short – the same company that brought us the famous Necco Wafers that so many people enjoy.  When Necco went out of business, the Spangler candy company bought the recipe in 2018 however, the treats took a year off in 2019 as the manufacturing equipment was moved to a new plant.  But, in 2020 Sweethearts were available once again to keep up the holiday tradition that we all look forward to each year.

Originally, conversation hearts had sayings on them such as “Be Mine”, “Kiss Me”, “Call Me”, or “Miss You”.  But as times have changed, the sayings have been updated to include “Call Me, or “Email Me” to keep the candy as relevant as our technology!

Seeing the success and following that Sweethearts have each Valentine’s Day, other candy companies came out with their own special twist on this classic treat.  Candy giant Brach’s version of Conversation Hearts only comes in a bag, while the original Sweethearts comes bagged and in those cute boxes we all used to hand out to our classmates at school.

Of course, there’s always going to be a trendy version of a candy favorite, and conversation hearts is no exception!  If you’re a fan of Hot Tamales… well, you guessed it!  There is now a Hot Tamales version of conversation hearts available for those looking to turn up the heat.

These cinnamon-flavored conversation hearts are perfect for igniting a spark on Valentine’s Day!

So while you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day candy, don’t forget to grab some Sweethearts conversation hearts candies.  We’re sure they will bring back plenty of memories and may even start a new holiday tradition with your own children.

The Guy’s Guide to Valentine’s Candy

Guys, we know you might not always look forward to Valentine’s Day. It’s not that you don’t want to show affection to the special person in your life, but there’s just so much pressure!  While we can’t give you advice on which “fancy” gift to give on Valentine’s Day, we certainly can help you with the “sweetest” gift of all… candy!

Each year, many candy manufacturers come out with trendy, new treats for holidays, and Valentine’s Day is no exception.  However, there are some tried-and-true favorites that have withstood the test of time and are guaranteed to be a hit with your sweetheart.  So here are some of our faves – old and new – for you to consider this year:

Sweethearts aka Conversation Hearts
Conversation hearts are the classic Valentine’s Day candy.  They have been around since the mid-1800s and are one of the most sought-after candies every year.  Buy some of your sweetheart’s favorite candy bars, gum, or snacks and put them into a pink, red, or purple gift bag.  Use some colored tissue paper in the bag as well, then pour a package of conversation hearts into the gift bag as cute filler.

Giant Hershey’s Kiss
A sweet kiss is so romantic on Valentine’s Day, but a Giant Hershey’s Kiss? An absolute must! Hershey’s Kisses are another favorite Valentine’s Day candy, and just as we love the little Hershey’s Kisses, the giant ones are even more delicious.

Heart Shaped Box of Dunkin’ Chocolates
Don’t give your sweetie just any box of chocolates this Valentine’s Day.  Take their love for Dunkin’ and give them a special box of chocolates that come in the flavor of three of the most popular Dunkin’ Donuts flavors – Chocolate Creme, Brownie Batter, and Boston Kreme.  Giving this box of chocolates may lead to you being mistaken for Cupid himself.

Reese’s Giant Peanut Butter Hearts
When the package says, “better than a card” you gotta believe it!  After all, nobody can resist the delicious combination of Reese’s peanut butter and milk chocolate.  These giant peanut butter hearts are a whopping 8oz each and since there are two in each pack there’s one for you to enjoy as well.

Now that we have shared some of our top pics for Valentine’s Day candy this year, be sure to pick some favorites of your own to add to a gift package and give to your sweetheart.  Just remember one thing… don’t forget the card!
