If you asked someone what their favorite “penny candy” is chances are they’re going to say “Tootsie Roll.” Yes, this bite sized chew is one of the most popular and for good reason.

The history of the Tootsie Roll dates back to 1907 when a candy maker from New York City, Leo Hirshfield, invented the chocolate-flavored chew and named it after his daughter, Clara who he affectionately called his little Tootsie.

Tootsie Rolls were the first penny candy to be individually wrapped when they hit the market commercially in 1908. More than 100 years later, Tootsie Rolls remain wildly popular with approximately 64 million pieces made per day!

The video-sharing network TikTok is a treasure trove of average humans sharing quick (and sometimes) funny videos of themselves doing wacky stunts, showing off their latest dance moves, and lip-synching to their favorite tunes.

Every now and then one of those videos ignites a trend, or a challenge, where others create their own video dovetailing off the original. The latest viral challenge features none other than, you guessed it… candy!

A few months ago, a TikTok “star” named Jaden Sprinz who because famous because of his large incisors came across a bag of Fruitie’s Ju-C Jelly candies. These fruit-shaped gummies are filled with jelly that when punctured, squirt out of the gummy capsule.

Sprinz filmed himself popping these candies with his oversize teeth, and well… that’s how TikTok works!

Since then, TikTokkers around the world have been searching for these candies to make their own video and take part in the TikTok Jelly Candy Challenge.

Now here’s why this has become a fun thing to do. When you bite into the Ju-C candy, you can’t predict just where the gush of jelly is going go to! Will it spatter you in the face? Will it make a mess on the floor? Will it fly into the face of the unsuspecting person doing the filming?

A quick search on the TikTok app will show thousands of funny videos of people taking part in the challenge.
