Summer Candy

August Is National Peach Month!

August is National Peach Month – and we’re celebrating our favorite peach-flavored candies!

Perhaps the most popular peach-flavored candies are gummy peach rings – ring-shaped gummies ripe with a fresh, yummy peach flavor and an underlying layer of soft marshmallow. (Peach fuzz is replaced with a coat of sugar.) Since their invention in the 1920’s, these gummy rings have paved the way for several other fabulous flavors, like green apple and melon; but none of these alternatives have been able to match the popularity of peach rings. And nothing beats the sweet aroma that arises from a just-opened bag of them! Many of us can also recall placing a peach ring on each finger and admiring some sweet jewelry before ripping them off with our teeth.  Peach gummies are also available in the form of sour peach slices.

If you’re feeling nostalgic after enjoying peach rings this month, try indulging in some peach chews! These bite-sized candies consist of chewy taffy that’s individually wrapped and infused with yummy peach flavor.

Perhaps newest to the family of peach-flavored candies are Peach Lemonade Tic Tac’s! These tiny candies start with a peach flavor, and change to lemonade as they melt in your mouth. We can’t think of any candy that’s better to enjoy on a summer day!

Sweet Candy Ice Cream Ideas

Sweet summertime is here and that means lots and lots of ice cream! This summer, why not take your creamy frozen treats up a notch? How so, you may wonder? With candy ice cream toppings and other fun additions! Check out these fun ice cream and candy pairings and deliciously frozen ideas:

Smores-style ice cream: The only way to make this campfire favorite ever more enticing? Ice cream-ifying it! Create a deconstructed smores-style ice cream treat by spooning marshmallow topping onto a few scoops of chocolate ice cream. Sprinkle with crushed graham crackers and voila! Smores ice cream!

Salted caramel pretzel ice cream: All you need for this enticing treat is vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and salted pretzels. The sweetness of the caramel pairs fantastically well with the salted pretzels, create that salty-sweet taste that we know you love.

Monster Ice Cream: Here’s a take on the classic monster cookie. Vanilla ice cream is the perfect base for the sweet toppings in this recipe. Simply sprinkle a scoop of vanilla with chopped nuts, mini M&Ms, and chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups for a full-of-flavor chilly treat!

Whoppers Ice Cream: Love the taste and texture of these sweet little malted milk balls? All you need is malted milk powder! Sprinkle a spoonful or two atop a scoop of your favorite flavor. To mimic Whoppers, we suggest using chocolate ice cream!

“Snickers” Ice Cream: Sure, you can add chopped snickers to the top of your ice cream, but why not infuse the flavors of a snickers bar throughout the entire scoop? Spoon caramel sauce and hot fudge on top of a scoop of ice cream (we suggest vanilla or peanut butter), and simply sprinkle on some chopped peanuts and you’ve got a cone-full of snickers!

The Almond Joy: Coconut pairs perfectly with summer, don’t you think? Sprinkle shredded coconut and chopped almonds overtop a scoop of chocolate for a fun frozen twist on the Almond Joy!

Celebrate the start of summer with one of these delicious candy-inspired ice cream treats. Let us know which one is your favorite!

Add Even More Deliciousness to Your Dessert with Ice Cream Toppings!

Not that we ever stop eating ice cream – even when the temperature is beyond freezing, I’ve always got time in my schedule for a scoop or two! – but during the summer, ice cream eating definitely kicks into action big time. Have I ever made it a personal test to see if I had enough time during a commercial break to make myself a sundae? Umm…maybe. (Yes. Yes I have. Even though I have a DVR, I like to challenge myself. Keeps ya young!)

But don’t go thinking for one minute that I’m eating bowl after bowl of plain ice cream. Even if I pick a flavor with candy bits, cookie dough, nuts or marshmallow already in the mix, I am certainly adding more. I learned years ago that the ‘less is more’ philosophy doesn’t even come close to applying to candy, so I do what I know in my heart is the right thing to do. I pile on ice cream toppings until the ice cream is no longer visible. So far, this method is working out pretty great!

As for where I’m getting all these tempting ice cream toppings, that would be right here at! In order to ensure that they are indeed fresh and flavorful, I have to run a taste test. I hope you understand that I’m doing this for all of you – it has nothing to do with my own candy cravings. I know, I know, I’ve heard it all before. You never met anyone so selfless! ;)

Want some unique and delicious ice cream toppings of your own? Be sure to browse our full selection and make ice cream time even better! You can also feel free to challenge yourself to the commercial break sundae test. I figure the calories I burn rushing to make my sundae quickly surely exceed the calories I’m eating! (Let me dream here, people.)

Fisher’s Popcorn: An Ocean City, MD Favorite You Can Now Buy at Blair!

If you told me years ago that one day we would be selling Fisher’s caramel popcorn in our online store, I would have thought you were crazy. Of course, I’ve been eating their popcorn much longer than the internet has existed, so if you even told me there would be stores living inside a computer I would have thought you were crazy! But time always marches on, changing at every turn, and for all the changes we don’t like, we have to admit that some of them are pretty great. The change we’re most excited about today is that we no longer have to wait for a trip to Ocean City, MD to enjoy that impossibly divine taste of Fisher’s caramel corn. We’ll still stop by their stand first when we do go, of course! But having it right at our fingertips is a very exciting thing.

Ocean City, MD is for my family what it is for many other families in Pennsylvania – a vacation spot that is far enough away from home to really feel like you got away, but not so far that you can’t drive, even with little ones in the car. Of all the boardwalks I’ve been to over the years, theirs is still my favorite, and Fisher’s popcorn is one of many reasons it likely always will be. When you’ve been visiting a place for many years, especially a place where you spend much of your time there walking, you start to think of locations along the way as mile markers. But, unlike a race, you’re taking your time and taking all these mile markers all in, so by the time you reach the end of the boardwalk your belly is full and so is your shopping bag!

As I’ve noticed many others do as well, when I stop at the impossible-to-resist Fisher’s popcorn stand, I always buy at least 2 tubs of caramel corn. One is to be enjoyed as we stroll the boardwalk, and the other for later that night back at the hotel. If it’s our last night in Ocean City, several more tubs will be purchased! For me, and countless others, it is a snack tied to some of the best memories. Most of us are at our best when on vacation, ready to really enjoy time with our friends and family without any of the stress that everyday life brings. I’m hoping that being able to buy Fisher’s popcorn online from our site allows people to not only savor that flavor whenever they wish, but maybe also to gather the family together after a long day and see if sharing in this vacation classic offers a bit of that same relaxing vibe at home.

Even if you can’t make it to the boardwalk this summer, bring a tub of Fisher’s caramel corn out on the porch, kick back in a lounge chair and close your eyes. Imagine that if you opened your eyes the ocean would be right there, and let that thought take away your worries!

Car-Friendly Candy and Snacks for Your Spring or Summer Road Trip

We have finally climbed our way out from under the frigid avalanche that was this past winter, and something as simple as sitting on the front porch feels like a release from prison! After months of only being outside long enough to shovel or walk from my house to my car, even outdoor chores like washing the windows are almost a joy. I’m just so happy to be outside! And what’s even better than feeling a warm rush of wind while sitting on a deck chair is feeling it while you’re driving down the highway toward somewhere exciting. It could be a friend’s house, an amusement park, a beach – just about anywhere! When you’re a road trip fan like I am, the journey is truly half the fun.

I love playing car games, I love listening to music, I love seeing new things along the way, and not being too rushed to stop and check some of them out. Seriously – if you’re planning a road trip this year, do yourself a favor and build some flexibility into your travel time. Sometimes those odd little stops along the way are gems! Yes, there’s a lot I love about road trip adventures, but what I don’t love is spending a ton of money on overpriced convenience store snacks when hunger strikes. And with a little planning, you don’t have to.

Before you head out on the highway, be sure to pack some sweet and salty snacks that will keep your belly happy between meals. Most of us idly snack more than usual when in a car for a long time, so the lengthier your journey, the more variety you should give yourself. I like to keep the ‘Big 3’ of snacking in mind when I pack my bag, ensuring I have at least 2 of each: Sweet, Salty, Satisfying. Some snacks meet the qualifications for more than one of those categories, of course, while others might not fill me up, but are a favorite nonetheless!

Here are a few of my favorite snacks and candies to take along on a road trip. Please share yours in the comments!

Charms Fluffy Stuff Cotton Candy Lollipops
Swedish Fish
Planters Peanuts
Jack Link’s Teriyaki Beef Jerky
Cracker Jacks
Moon Pies

The One… The Only… The Rainbow Swirly Lollipop!

How excited do I get when I see free Dum Dums on the counter at the bank or a restaurant? Probably more excited than most. How high do my eyebrows raise when I spy seasonal Tootsie Pops? Pretty high! How much do my eyes light up when someone offers me a Ring Pop, or I remember I have a bag that I’d forgotten about? Let’s just say they get pretty sparkly! I’m a lollipop kinda lady, and it’s rare that I meet one I don’t like. But for as fabulous as all those mentioned above, and many, many more may be, I do believe the first lollipop to ever leave me speechless was a Rainbow Swirly Pop.

The Rainbow Swirly Pop is more than just a lollipop, and that means a lot coming from someone who thinks almost all lollipops are to be treasured no matter their shape, size or wrapper! It is a thing of sweet beauty – a giant wooden wand with ribbons of wrapped deliciousness on top. It is oversized without looking like a novelty. It is boldly colorful without looking like it’s only for kids. It offers a classic flavor that isn’t the least bit ‘sickeningly sweet’ like some candies can be, even when you’ve been enjoying it for an hour! It is a lollipop made for lazy summer nights, something I’ve been loving for weeks now. It also happens to make a great stocking stuffer, present topper, and impactful addition to a candy buffet. So basically, it’s lollipop perfection!

Create a Candy Cake with Candy Sticks, Sour Patch Kids and More!

Typically, when I’m looking for a fun and unique recipe that incorporates candy, I find myself searching through the oodles of inspiration the internet offers. After all, there are far more creative people out there than me, and if they’re willing to share their creations, who am I to not take them up on the offer? But this morning, as I sat on my front porch and enjoyed the sunshine and warm air, a little inspiration of my own struck. And now it’s my turn to pay it forward by throwing my little idea out into the universe!

A Lovely, Flavorful Front Lawn

Don’t get me wrong – for as delicious as some animals seem to find grass, it has never struck me as a scrumptious snack. That said, I do love me some sprinkles! My idea – which can be totally customized to include any number of additional delights – starts with a rectangular cake in your favorite flavor, generously coated with a layer of green icing. You can allow the green icing to serve as the grass all on its own, or add extra texture with green sprinkles.

Put Up a Fence

It might actually work better to put up the fence before the sprinkles, but really, either way should work fine. I find a white picket fence to be most attractive, spanning the full perimeter of the cake. As for what to construct your fence from? Candy sticks! (Note: Some of you may know these as candy cigarettes, though the name has been changed to sticks. The candy is still the same, though!)

Give Your Yard Some Life

From Sour Patch Kids to gummy bears, there are countless delicious inhabitants for your yard to consider! Other tasty options include gummy worms, mini gummy butterflies stuck to the fence with a dab of icing, and/or anise bears or cinnamon bears. If there’s room on your cake, you can even make a ‘swimming pool’ with blue sprinkles and fill it with gummy octopi, assorted Swedish Fish, Gummi Peach Penguins and more.

The options are truly endless, and I hope you’ll give this summery cake idea a try! If you want to get really inventive, consider adding a dog house made of graham crackers, or building a trampoline whose center is made of a Fruit Roll-Up. Or – a fire with little pretzels as logs! I don’t know where all these ideas are coming from today, but I like it. :)
