Go Green on St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most popular holidays in America. People all over the country don their finest green clothes and celebrate their Irish heritage with songs, drinks, and green-colored treats. We’ve always partaken in the festivities every March 17, but we always wondered why everything is so green on that day. Where did that tradition come from? Well, the story behind it is just as fascinating as the holiday itself!

Originally, the color blue was associated with St. Patrick. This blue tradition lasted for hundreds of years. Over time, the color most commonly associated with St. Patrick’s Day became green. Most people believe it is because of the lush, green lands that cover the majority of Ireland. They don’t call Ireland The Emerald Isles for nothing!

The prominence of green has some strong political undertones as well. In the late 1700s, the Irish faced repression from the British, and wearing a shamrock or green clothes was often seen as a strong act of rebellion against the British, and those who dared wear a shamrock or green were punished, sometimes with death.

Today, wearing and displaying green is much more celebratory than defiant. At BlairCandy.com, you can find a wide variety of green St. Patrick’s Day candy. Here are some of our popular selections:

Rainbow Cupcakes: When we first saw this colorful cupcake we couldn’t put our fingers on what the rainbow was made of. We’ve been in the candy business for many, many years, and we’re pretty good at picking out sweets even if they’ve been modified in some way. Well, imagine our pleasure and surprise when we read the ingredients and realized it’s an Airheads rainbow! You’ll need Airheads in a few different rainbow colors, and gold chocolate coins for the end of the rainbow as well. While making Airheads rainbows seems as though it could be a bit tricky, the ease of the rest of the recipe definitely makes up for it.

Skittles and Rolos Treat Bags: Aren’t really up for baking, but still want St. Patrick’s Day treats that make a splash? These couldn’t be cuter or easier! Simply purchase cellophane candy bags and fill the bottom with gold. Or, you know, gold foil-wrapped Rolos! Gold chocolate coins could work as well, or just about any candy in a golden wrapper. Next, layer on the Skittles by color, keeping Roy G. Biv in mind! Secure it at the top and try not to jostle them around too much. You want to be sure your Skittles don’t have an opportunity to get mixed up in the bag.

Green Popcorn & Pretzel Party Mix: There are few things luckier than stumbling across a party-worthy recipe that looks great, is full of ingredients that almost everyone loves, and is super simple to make. This sweet and salty snack could be your ‘big treat’, taking center stage with its mix of chocolate chips, pretzels, popcorn, green M&M’s and more. Want to make it a bit minty? Consider using Mint Dark Chocolate M&M’s!

Shamrock Cupcakes: These simple but striking cupcakes make an especially wonderful treat for those whose candy tastes lean a bit toward the nostalgic side. While gum drops and Spearmint Leaves aren’t as popular with youngsters as they are with more mature candy fans, youngsters aren’t the only ones eating cupcakes! Perhaps you have to grow up on Spearmint Leaves and Orange Slices to understand how oh-so-good they really are. Lucky for me, I did!

Leprechaun Trap Cake: This is the recipe that had me calling people over to my desk. If I could make mine look half this amazing I’d be thrilled! As if the ladder made from pretzels wasn’t darling enough, the pretzels make another appearance on top of the cake beneath the chocolate coins. What are they doing there? Oh, just being an important part of the leprechaun trap. As for the cake itself? Well, that just happens to be a rainbow inside. Yep – coolest, luckiest cake ever!

Candy Goes Green – For St. Patrick’s Day, that is!

As the shelves full of pink and red Valentine’s Day candy get smaller and shorter with each passing day, the team here at Blair is preparing for the next holiday on the candy horizon. We don’t let ourselves get too teary when one holiday passes, as there’s always another hot on its heels! And in this case, as the romance of Valentine’s Day slips away, the luck of St. Patrick’s Day candy whirls in. Not a shabby trade – especially if you get both and you’re lucky in love!

Finding the perfect candy for St. Patty’s Day is as simple as going for the green and gold. Luckily, those two colors often yield some pretty tasty treats, many of which are also super cute to boot! We put together a list of our Top 3 St. Patrick’s Day Candy Must-Haves. Do you agree with our list? What might you add to the lineup?

#1) Chocolate Coins – It doesn’t seem to matter how old I get – gold chocolate coins never lose their cool! With 2 lbs. in each bag – approximately 150 coins – you’ll have plenty to fill a candy bowl with treasure, pass them out at parades or parties, or even invest in a little black pot to keep them in like an end-of-the-rainbow decoration. And, naturally, they’re good for eating as well!

#2) Bubble Gum Coins – An even more affordable way to enjoy the fun factor of coin candy, green foil-wrapped bubble gum coins make a wonderful complement to our gold chocolate coins. With roughly 100 to a bag, you can pop your way to St. Patrick’s Day!

#3) Gold Mine Gum – While most of us will never get the chance to call a genuine bag of gold our own, Gold Mine Nugget Bubble Gum lets us dream! It also lets us enjoy a fresh, fruity taste all wrapped up in a cute cloth pouch that beats a paper package any day of the week.
